Diversity and Inclusions.

Diversity.

Workforce diversity includes employees from different backgrounds, races, cultures, genders, ages, religions, sexual orientations, abilities, and disabilities in the workplace. The term ‘workforce diversity’ describes an organization with a diverse and heterogeneous workforce. This concept has evolved over time as businesses have become more global and inclusive. In the past, diversity was mainly associated with gender and race. However, the definition of workforce diversity has expanded to include a broad range of dimensions, such as gender, race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, religion, socioeconomic status, ability, and skills (Aashish, 2023).

Workforce diversity aims to establish an inclusive workplace representing the community in which it operates. By fostering a diverse inclusive workforce, companies can benefit from a wide range of perspectives and ideas, which can help them become more innovative and competitive (Aashish, 2023).

Today, businesses must consider several types of diversity when creating a diverse and inclusive workplace. These can be grouped into four categories (Aashish, 2023),

1.     Internal Diversity – Employees are born with certain characteristics that make up their internal diversity, such as gender, race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, religion, socioeconomic status, and ability.

2.     External Diversity – Employee’s external diversity characteristics, such as their education, skills, life experiences, cultural and religious backgrounds, and international experience, are acquired outside of work.

3.     Organizational Diversity – Organizational diversity refers to the various workplace characteristics, such as job roles, management positions, employment status, union membership, and so on, that can lead to different perspectives and experiences.

4.     Worldview Diversity – Workers’ understanding of world events, problems, and solutions is known as worldview diversity, including political beliefs, moral values, and social attitudes (Aashish, 2023).

Inclusions.

Inclusion is a culture that values and respects everyone, allowing them to advance and do their best work. Every member feels valued, respected, and included when an environment is inclusive regardless of their background or identity and has equal opportunities without exclusion. Inclusion means establishing an atmosphere where everyone is treated with respect and dignity and has equal opportunities, irrespective of their background or identity. It is essential because it is necessary for functioning equitably in an increasingly diverse global community and offers various advantages for businesses, workplaces, and schools (Kai, 2023).

Difference between Diversity and Inclusions.

Diversity and Inclusion are two terms that are frequently used together, but they have different meanings. Diversity refers to the variety of differences among individuals and groups, including but not limited to culture, race, gender, age, and religion. On the other hand, inclusion means embracing, appreciating, and respecting these differences, ensuring everyone feels a sense of belonging (Anja, 2019).

Diversity is when an organization has people with different backgrounds and characteristics, and Inclusion is when everyone has an equal chance to contribute and influence the workplace. Implementing diversity and inclusion initiatives in the workplace can be a challenging task. Numerous companies tend to make common mistakes in this area, but these mistakes can help the organizations understand what they are doing wrong. Unfortunately, many organizations may not even recognize their mistakes unless they intentionally seek out feedback on their diversity inclusion efforts. (BUSH, 2023)

  1. While you have informed on the Diversity and inclusion terminologies and it drives productivity, gives new perspectives, enhances creativity and innovation. You have mentioned that there are challenges.

Yes, there are challenges. Some of which are: Communication- different cultures, languages, age groups and can pose challenges such as disagreements, confusions.
Slow Decision making- diverse teams numerous opinions and feedback.
Creating Trust- If there are observed favoritism or discrimination.

While I have highlighted the challenges, the solution obviously have to come from the top. Leadership from the top needs to set example and embrace. Design strong policies and procedures of value system within the organization. Leaders need to focus on why leadership matters and communicate this. Also show with quantification by way of financial metrics such profits and revenues.

While you have provided insights on both diversity and inclusion, I have just highlighted what challenges organizations have faced when considering diversity and inclusion and what can be done to tackle it. Diversity and inclusion is part and parcel of the organizations.

Earlier it was just a quota system but now it is about equality, fairness and inclusion which is the new norm. While there are laws to protect it, organizations needs to exemplify this in their practices if they are to succeed.

  4. DEI - Diversity, Equity and Inclusion are one of the most commonly used promises from employers. In today's progressive and contemporary world this is a must to have a positive work culture. This is especially important in a multi-cultural and diverse environment like Sri Lanka.
